OUGD402 | STUDIO BRIEF 1 | THE HEPWORTH

Firstly we visited the Hepworth, an art gallery in Wakefield showcasing a lot of contemporary art. The Hepworth's name is taken from Barbara Hepworth. The gallery was very grey, minimal and sleek. The exhibitions were spacious and sparse. The aesthetic for the entire gallery was very consistent. Although I'm very interested in looking around galleries, I just don't fully appreciate some sculptures as much as others, and unfortunately 75% of the exhibitions were sculptures that were quite boring and plain in my opinion. There was a few that caught my eye, for example the one below of Jesus, simply because it looked very strange and eerie, it didn't really make any sense. I think I would have enjoyed the visit if there was more odd sculptures and exhibitions, for example a favourite of mine is the Saatchi, and the Hepworth just wasn't on the same level for me.

OUGD402 | STUDIO BRIEF 1 | THE TETLEY

The Tetley is a centre for contemporary art and learning located in the stunning art deco headquarters of the former Tetley Brewery in central Leeds. The vibes that the Tetley had contrasted a lot with the modern feel of the Hepworth.

I wasn't fond of that many pieces in the exhibitions, it seemed more like a traditional museum/gallery and didn't have anything too eye catching within it. The rooms were quite cramped which may be a positive for some exhibitions but for the Tetley, not so much. The rooms were not set out with anything exciting in them to draw me in.

These pieces were probably the only ones I particularly liked because of the mysterious patterns and repetitive nature.

The way the Tetley was set out and the locations of the signs was clear, which was a positive. I almost felt these signs looked out of place in the 'dated' feel of the gallery. They're much more minimal and modern than the setting.

They also had an area where you could draw freely, so naturally we all decided to draw each other.

OUGD402 | STUDIO BRIEF 1 | SARAH HONETH

Anything hand rendered usually appeals to me, and when I saw this I could really relate it to my own style of working. I always like to incorporate some squiggles here and there, by scribbling with a copic marker and scanning it in, or some ink with a paintbrush. Sarah Honeth's work is spontaneous, and the above image is my favourite example.

OUGD402 | STUDIO BRIEF 2 | BUSINESS CARDS | DEVELOPMENT

I kept these quite simple as the main focus is the capitalized name. Sometimes less is more, and I experimented with different colour variations; however I'd like to add a different colour into my self branding instead of just using black and white.

Here I added some colour other than black/white. I tried branching out from the hand rendered name, and tried it in Didot. I captured the 'collage' effect with the ripped paper but I don't think this really works as a business card and the name looks too elegant for my liking.

I then tried the same thing as I did at first but with a different version of my hand rendered type. I also tried out layering different colours behind the white. I think the red and the green looks a bit like Christmas though. I much prefer the purple and the green.

And here I tried out a lowercase version, I like how the counters of the e,d and a are filled in, as this was actually done by accident because of the thickness of my paintbrush.

For this version, I focused on the illustrations being the hand rendered part, and used an existing typeface for the brand name as it would be too much. I dont really think this looks effective as the snake is a bit too large and detailed, it looks a bit silly rotated, possibly because of the flower I have drawn in the middle.

Using a developed version of my brand logo, I created these as starting points. I prefer the second design as it looks visually appealing being very central and focused.

Then I tried to fill the card with the logo to represent Medusa's 'hair', but I'm unsure if it really works for the front of the card. It was more successful as the back of the card however the type I used on this design isn't very legible.

I tried out just using the hand rendered 'M' as the logo however I felt this did not represent my brand name and so is not as successful as the snake, although it does look minimal and works well visually.

This will be my final design as it combines the hand rendered brand name and the logo successfully without looking too busy. I'm still unsure on whether to pick the white or the black but after this decision is made the next step is to use this and expand on it, perhaps mock up some collateral.

OUGD402 | STUDIO BRIEF 2 | SELF BRANDING | IDEA GENERATION & DEVELOPMENT

As I am interested in hand rendered elements within design, I decided to come up with some type and a potential logo. I used paint for the type, which I have scanned in to be manipulated on Photoshop. I really like the texture that can be achieved from hand rendered scans. The illustration is done in my style, using pointillism and paying attention to detail.  I'm unsure if this will be suitable as a logo but it was fun to develop regardless.

I also created a more simple version of a snake that could be developed into a more versatile logo.
